An investigation of osmosis – Learning resource
Crossing membranes - An investigation of osmosis
In this investigation you will examine the movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane and also develop your skills in constructing a hypothesis and a method. The investigation and following activities can be completed at school or at home using readily available materials.
Step 1: Soak 3 eggs in vinegar to remove the calcium carbonate shell
- Fill 3 beakers or cups with vinegar and place an egg in each.
- Place a plastic cup or beaker containing water over each egg to keep the egg submerged in the vinegar.
- Do not pick any shell off.
- It may take a few days to remove the shells depending on the strength of the vinegar.
