Applying advanced microscopy to reveal the structure and function of cells pre-task
Your teacher will provide you with the Applying advanced microscopy to reveal the structure and function of cells interactive PDF that you will fill out as you work your way through this activity.
Cells
Cells are the most fundamental structural and functional units of life. Cells must make possible all the processes of life: taking in matter and energy from the outside world and converting them into useful forms, moving, transforming themselves for specialist functions, and replicating themselves. All living organisms are composed of cells, either one cell (unicellular) or many cells (multicellular).
Living organisms are classified as either prokaryotic or eukaryotic, based on the type of cells that make them up. Prokaryotic cells are relatively smaller and simpler than eukaryotic cells.
Prokaryotic cells
Microbes of the kingdoms Bacteria and Archaea are composed of prokaryotic cells.
How familiar are you with the structure of a prokaryotic cell? Complete the bacterial cell interactive below to test your knowledge.
When you have finished the interactive, test your knowledge by labelling the diagram in Section 1 of your interactive PDF (supplied by your teacher).
