Advancing medicine using digital technologies

The scope of this unit is to engage students to design and develop robots and code to solve a real-life problem. The context of this unit revolves around cancer and the impact of chemotherapy medication. The activities were designed in sequence to scaffold students to develop an understanding about cells, cancer and chemotherapy, designing and building a robot, think algorithmically, code in Snap! and troubleshoot design and coding issues.

Level

These resourse have been designed for students in Year 5 and 6

Resource parts

Part 1: Designing a medical robot

Students collaboratively design a medical robot that can improve the delivery of chemotherapy to cancerous cells. Click here for more information and to view this resource.

Part 2: Build your medical robot

Students are introduced to the Hummingbird robot and core concepts on developing a medical robot. Click here for more information and to view this resource.

Part 3: Thinking algorithmically - Step by step instructions for robots

Students break down a complex action into simpler components, refine instructions so that they are precise and construct flow charts of code to guide a robot through a maze. Click here for more information and to view this resource.

Part 4: Coding your medical robot

Students design code for the robot they have previously constructed to solve their problem. Click here for more information and to view this resource.
