Construction and manipulation of representations in STEM: Windows into your students’ learning
GTAC is proud to be part of the Department of Education and Training (DET) Virtual STEM Teaching Academy. As part of this group, we will be running our Construction and manipulation of representations in STEM: Windows into your students' learning professional learning program in 2019.
Extended, focused professional learning that is relevant to your practice
This program provides free professional learning to Middle Years (7-9) Science teachers in Victorian rural Government schools, with an aim to support teachers new to the profession, teaching out-of-field or established teachers. Up to two teachers from each school are invited to participate. Over six weekly workshops, you will build your pedagogical content knowledge and explore ways that the pedagogical approach featured in the program incorporates DET High Impact Teaching Strategies, the Framework for Improving Student Outcomes and meets VCAA Science and Critical and Creative Thinking Curriculum achievement standards.
Improve student outcomes with a proven approach
The pedagogical focus for this professional learning is the Representation Construction Approach. This approach provides opportunities for you and your students to discover and reflect on how they learn. Through their construction and manipulation of representations, student learning is made visible and enables further development of knowledge and skills. Where possible GTAC will also run a free Year 7 - 8 student program with your students at your school (or hub school) so that you can see this approach in action.
Collaborate with teachers in your region
The professional learning program offers multiple opportunities for you to connect and work with teachers in your region. Each workshop will enable teachers to share collective expertise and evidence based practice, as well as provide opportunities to learn and develop through joint work.
Experience the new DET video conferencing hardward and software
Incorporating both face-to-face and virtual workshops, the professional learning will also provide training on how to use the new DET video conferencing hardware and software. This powerful new platform will enable us to connect from anywhere and also open up opportunities for you and your students to connect with other teachers and experts in Victoria and around the world.
Personal support from GTAC team members
GTAC Education Officers Chris Szwed and Alex Sipidias will be leading this program in 2019. They will bring their combined 10 years of teacher professional learning experience with them, and support you each step of the way, as you work towards your learning goals.
School committment
If your application is successful, we recommend that you apply to access two of your Professional Practice Days for each face-to-face workshop. You will also require a tentative committment from your school principal (or assistant principal) that other duties will not prevent you from attending workshops. This is required to be formally given should your application be successful.
